Mastery Learning - What a Struggling Student Needs

There are two main learning approaches that are typically used in public and private schools: Mastery Learning and Spiral Learning. From what I have seen, Spiral Learning is the most common approach to learning, yet research has shown Mastery Learning to be one of the most effective methods. Children who are struggling benefit the most from a Mastery Learning approach to a subject.

iPad - An Introduction

Apple is always looking out to do something different. Be it the Mac computers, or the Mac software, the legendary iPod or the latest craze, iPhone, Apple has always taken the markets by storm. These products are so good and different that people start to camp out in front of the shops to buy their latest gadget. Another gadget from the stable of Apple, which has generated quite a storm in the digital market, is the iPad. iPad was taken out in the market after much wait. The public was just dying for tablet device from the stable of apple that lets you do things that you can't do with an iPod or an iPhone. The CEO of Apple, Steve Jobs, has succeeded in bringing out another blockbuster gadget, and quickly thousands of iPad devices sold in a matter of weeks.

iPad is a tablet device, which is a step ahead of the last offering from Apple, iPhone. For the iPad, Apple designed an operating system, quite different from the operating system of their Mac computers. Also, they have to make it quite different from the regular computers or laptops, which are available in the market and quite successful in their own way. There were many companies, which were in line to take out a tablet device, but Apple is always the first to do innovative things. Even here they were the first to bring out the tablet device they called the iPad.

iPad has all the qualities that were present in iPod and iPhone. It can play all the applications of the iPhone, either at their original size or at a size double that of the iPhone, so that it can fit the screen of the Pad.

There are quite a lot of features in the iPad, which are solely designed for the internet. The iPad is especially designed to surf the net in a far better way than an iPhone. Surfing the internet through iPad is a joy. You can do all the things you could do on iPhone, but with the new attractive features. iPad also has a large LCD touch screen. As the arrival of iPad was greatly expected by the application developers, so within weeks of its launch, there are literally thousands of applications which are especially designed to be used in iPad. Apple has especially done great work on making it more suitable to read e-books and e-newspapers. So, along with the laptops, iPad is also a rival for various e-book readers in the market, like Kindle.

If you have not bought an iPad for you, then now just don't wait. The best feature of iPad, just like any other apple innovations are the great applications that are available to run on the gadget. You can download many innovative applications, for every purpose you can think of. Most of the simpler applications can be downloaded free of cost. But some of the complex applications can be downloaded from the web stores at nominal costs. So, go ahead and bring an iPad along with the iPad Accessories and open a range of possibilities for you.

CDL Truck Drivers and CDL Truck Driver Recruiters-Understanding the Lies and Deceit

Many CDL truck drivers that label CDL driver recruiters as liars have, in fact, dealt with a lying driver recruiter or two. The fact of the matter is, one or two bad experiences should not force a person to shy away from "all" of the CDL truck driver recruiters out there. Believe it or not, there are some very honest CDL driver recruiters in the industry and surprisingly enough, a driver recruiter that has been labeled a liar could have simply been misinformed or misunderstood. Although there are CDL driver recruiters that are notorious liars, some recruiters have been given information with the realistic expectation that it is true. With transportation and freight being somewhat unpredictable, drivers need to understand that in life, sometimes things change. In the transportation business, change can occur almost daily and being able to embrace change is key to understanding it and living a content life as a Class A CDL driver.

Silicon Valley: Fun for the Entire Family

Silicon Valley, located in the southern region of San Francisco, is widely recognized as the computer technology hub of the U.S. if not the world. The areas name refers to the silicon used to make computer chips. While many visiting the area have experienced the pleasures that San Francisco has to offer, few consider Silicon Valley a vacation destination in and of itself. However, there are numerous activities, attractions and places of interest to visit that are not necessarily computer related.

Staff Retention Begins With Challenging Work

In an article I recently wrote, I urged non-profit organizations to get their act together and develop a plan to do a better job of retaining staff. If we continue to climb out of the recession in 2010, this year will pose unique challenges to organizations who don't feel the urgency of having a plan to hold on to their most talented and dedicated staff. Even in good times, the majority of the U.S. workforce would change jobs if they had the opportunity. Now we have a situation where people have been grateful to have a job...any job, but because they are sitting still does not mean they are happy.

I Love German Wine and Food - A Mosel Riesling

If you are looking for fine German wine and food, consider the Mosel region of central western Germany on the border of Luxembourg. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you'll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local white Riesling tasted with several meals and paired with imported cheeses.

The Mosel Valley has long been considered one of the most beautiful river valleys in the world. This region, previously known as Mosel-Saar-Ruwer for its three rivers, is proud of its Riesling wine. Some of the greatest Rieslings in Germany and in fact in the entire world come from the Mosel Valley. Experts can often identify Mosel Rieslings because of the slate in the local soil, which may impart a taste of flint. Mosel vineyard slopes are among the steepest in the wine-producing world, sometimes attaining 70 degrees. The soil is so precious that every spring local workers lug pails of soil up these slopes, reversing temporarily the effect of the rains that wash the soil down every winter.

Mosel is fifth among the thirteen German wine regions with respect to both vineyard acreage and total wine production. Slightly more than three quarters of the wine produced here is QbA and somewhat less than one quarter is higher quality QmP wine. Only one percent is table wine. Over half of of all Mosel wine is Riesling. The German hybrid Müller-Thurgau represents about 20% of the wine production. In third place is the historic variety Elbing that dates back to Roman times and is the major grape variety in the neighboring country of Luxembourg. Only about 2% of Mosel wine is red.

Basically the Mosel Valley runs from Koblenz not far from Germany's former capital Bonn to the city of Trier that sits very close to the border. These two cities are linked by the Mosel Weinstrasse (Mosel Wine Road) which is about 140 miles (224 kilometers) long on the eastern side of the river and somewhat less on the western side. Of course, you could take the autobahn to get between Koblenz and Trier at breakneck speed. If you do, you'll miss the interesting little towns and vineyards along the way.

Bernkastel-Kues is a town of about eight thousand that sits astride the Mosel River with Bernkastel on the east bank and Kues on the west bank. Bernkastel is about seven hundred years old but the area itself was first inhabited thousands of years ago. Bernkastel's medieval town square is lovely with numerous half-timbered houses, some of which were built in the Fifteenth Century. St. Michaelsbrunnen (St. Michael's Fountain) is right on the square and other historic fountains are nearby. Make sure to see the ruins of Burgruine Landshut (Castle of Landshut) for an excellent view of the city and surrounding vineyards. The first weekend of September marks the annual Weinfest der Mittelmosel (Wine Festival of the Middle Moselle River Valley) that includes a festive procession and a great fireworks display.

Bernkastel is home to the Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard producing one of Germany's most expensive wines. According to popular legend a Fourteenth Century Archbishop of Trier was too sick to be helped by traditional medicine. He tasted some of the local wine, recovered, and said, "The best doctor grows in this vineyard in Bernkastel." Due to questionable changes in German wine laws wine bottles labeled Bernkasteler Doctor may now be made by thirteen producers instead of three as previously. Let the buyer beware.

Kues was home to the Fifteenth Century theologian and philosopher Nikolaus Casanus who founded the St.-Nikolaus-Hospital that operates a wine estate and the Mosel-Weinmuseum (Mosel Wine Museum). The museum's library is open for tours and its wine cellar is open for tastings. Several local winemakers hold Tage der offenen Weinkeller (Open wine cellar days) in which they present and sell their wine in their own wine cellars.

Before reviewing the Mosel wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.
Start with Gaensestopfleher (Foie Gras).
For your second course enjoy Entenbrust an Brombeerjus (Duck Breast in Blackberry Juice).
As a dessert indulge yourself with Schokoladencreme (Chocolate Mousse).

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Kabinett 2005 8.6% alcohol about $20.00

Let's start by quoting the marketing materials. The 2005 Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett - still manages to show true Kabinett delicacy on the palate, which Weis attributes in part to earlier harvest and frankly in part to this site's compatibility with higher yields. Skin contact and minimal clarification in the cellar help compensate for any danger of dilution. (Lower-yielding parcels nowadays must result in Spätlese or Auslese.) Pineapple, grapefruit, black currant, and Golden Delicious apple dominate the proceedings, suffused with an aura of smoky, crushed stone, and mouthwatering acidity. This is once again a 'little' Mosel archetype and a terrific value ... And now for the review.

Before the meal I thought to taste this wine on its own. It was delicately acidic and palate cleansing with light bubbles. Then I started with sweet and sour purchased barbecued chicken wings. The wine was fine with light acidity. Now I was ready to begin, so to speak. My first pairing was with a commercial barbecued chicken leg with the paprika-coated skin, potatoes roasted in chicken fat, and some disappointing pickle slices. The wine's fruit intensified to meet the chicken's fat. This Riesling was quite round when dealing with the melt-in-your-mouth potatoes.

The next meal was an omelet with a local Provolone cheese and Turkish salad. The wine was round, thick, and pleasantly sweet. The word feathery came to mind. It sort of floated especially after the Turkish salad. Then I savored a high-quality, chocolate-coated vanilla ice cream bar. The wine retained its acidity; it was almost a good match.

The final meal was more of a snack. I ate some packaged Texas corn fritters with generous dollops of 14% sour cream. The wine was bold, sweet, and pleasantly acidic but frankly wasted on such plebian fare. I did finish the bottle with home made barbecued chicken to which the wine did honor. Even though the barbecue sauce wasn't sweet the combination was excellent.

The initial cheese pairing was with a Dutch Edam that was nutty, a bit fatty, and somewhat sour. The Riesling's sweetness seemed to step up a notch and it displayed tingling acidity. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a wine and cheese pairing this much. Then I went to a mild-tasting Italian Friulano. The wine was acidic with sugar in the background.

Final verdict. This Riesling is a winner. I wouldn't hesitate to pair it with a top of the line German poultry dish, the kind that you pay big bucks for over there. At 8.9% this is one of the least alcoholic wines that I have tasted in a long, long time. And you know what, I didn't miss it a bit.

Talent Management - The Key To Corporate Success!

A company is only as good as its employees who are a core asset of any business. Finding potential employees may be relatively straight forward, but proper evaluation and screening to ensure only the most fitting employees are hired, those that best match the job specifications, is not an easy task. Talent management companies specialise in the methodology and processes involved in effective recruitment and in the development of employees to meet the organisations objectives.

Many companies focus on the recruitment of new employees but fail to manage the development of skills and talents of their current personnel. A system must be integrated into the business strategy to strike a balance between the two and create an optimal workforce. Therefore, this system should not be the concern of the Human Resource Department alone but of the entire team to align their mindsets to the corporate goal and work together towards achieving it.

Talent management services aim to meet current and future organisational needs. Through strategic procedures of recruitment, development and retention can be improved to attain business excellence. The process revolves around performance, compensation and acquisition to create the right environment for the workers, thus, achieving greater productivity. Talent management solutions make it simpler for companies to align employee and organisational goals, identify and fill aptitude gaps, provide learning and development programs, and plan succession within the hierarchy.

Effective human resource management is essential when building a competitive labour force. In the traditional Human Resource function, success is measured with metrics such as the number of hires and the number of development programs attended. On the other hand, success in talent management is measured by the increase in productivity of the employees and the total impact the increased productivity has on the business. Rather than being a one-off event, this should be an ongoing process that involves continuous planning and improvement of talent to benefit the company.

Correctly adopted talent management is crucial for the success of an organisation. Workers are one of the most valuable assets of any business, and with talent management, that asset can be turned into true business value.

Food Testing - Why Do We Need It?

Have you ever wondered whether the food you eat on a daily basis is really safe to eat? Perhaps you haven't, perhaps you take it for granted that everything you buy from the store is as safe as houses?

You'll probably be glad to hear then that this is indeed the case in the majority of instances and that the food industry works extremely hard to ensure that the food you are sold is a safe as possible.

The food manufacturing industry takes food safety extremely seriously to ensure that the Public's health is not at risk. Back that up with the fact that one slip up could cost the reputation of the manufacturer and you'll start to see why it really is so important.

The food testing industry works closely with manufacturers to ensure that all products are scientifically tested and proved to be safe for human consumption at a variety of stages, from raw material to production line, to finished product.

Food testing can cover many aspects of the food manufacturing process. Most commonly, a common set of scientific techniques are used to analyse, assess and record the safety and viability of a product in terms of microbiological stability and chemical composition.

The assessment of microbiological stability aims to ensure the identification of microbiological hazards that could be of danger to humans, such as salmonella and ecoli. It also serves to establish a safe shelf life, ensuring that the product is not consumed after a certain point.

Assessing chemical composition allows food technicians to identify the nutritional make-up of foods and advise on specific health, safety and nutritional queries. Food testing is most commonly performed in a laboratory environment and follows stringent analysis and recording procedures.

So why do we need it? Quite simple really . . . To ensure the safety of the food we eat.

Getting the Right Lead Metrics

Managing properly the volume of leads, which means business inquiries, is essential. These are venues for getting sales, thus it is not a wonder why companies outline some lead metrics. The purpose of having the metrics is to assess the effectiveness of the lead management program implemented by the organization. Here, business owners will have an idea as to what aspect of performance needs to be improved.

When you speak of lead management, three things are to be considered - retrieval, receipt, and tracking. Each of them has an effect to the whole lead system of any company. Usually, they are the very same things that are given focus in coming up with reliable metrics. The challenge for business owners and managers here is to have quantifiable metrics. Remember that the main aim is evaluation, thus factors should be measurable.

Lead retrieval, receipt, and tracking have an important meaning for sales. In fact, these are the so-called crucial points of the sales process of a company. The optimization of the said three things can result to an increase in profit velocity. Likewise, efficiency at these critical points could lessen the disappointment of the sales force of an organization. They would also increase the total production.

In going to details, a lead retrieval should be able to assess or evaluate the sales capacity of the company, including its total performance and even velocity. In order to accelerate profits, the organization must learn how to move lead retrieval beyond the ordinary scanning of a list of possible clients. Sales people should show their ability to meet quotas, if there are any set by the company. Make it a habit therefore to ensure that your employees understand their duties and what are expected of them in terms of their performance.

Second is the lead receipt. Your company will be at a loss if you are still hooked up to manual input of your leads. This system is time consuming and the worst thing is you are more likely to lose your client. Therefore, use the technology today to improve your lead receipt process. This is also essential for accountability. Remember that your leads are very valuable, thus you should manage them properly. Otherwise, you just might suffer a huge sales loss.

Tracking or also known as recording is the last of the three crucial points of lead management. It is always an advantage to keep track of the sales process of the company. This will give business owners and managers an insight on how their market behaves. The tracking definitely helps the organization in maximizing successful sources of leads. Experts say that lead tracking is an effective way of getting more clients and optimizing opportunities as well. Studying sales action, which is a huge part of the tracking process, could influence a management decision when it comes to sales actions.

Meanwhile, the important lesson here is to get your sales people involved in coming up with lead metrics. They are likely to give management the real situation in the field, thus it pays off that they would have some inputs in the crafting of metrics. Make sure though that every factor listed in the metrics is quantifiable and must be tested.

Marketing Strategies for Healthcare

Healthcare and life, in general, are the same if you "plan nothing then you will achieve nothing." In order to implement a healthcare program, a person will need to have a clear vision of what they wish to accomplish coupled with a strategy and enough resources to reach his or her goal. In the video, "Why Healthcare Practice needs a Marketing Plan?" it outlined the core reason why a healthcare plan is needed, three necessary considerations, and three distinguished strategies needed to executed a healthcare plan properly and efficiently.

The Importance of Human Resource Development

In a highly competitive business, even a strong market position cannot be held or improved with mediocre people. It takes the best people, continually giving their best, to attain challenging but achievable goals. It takes people with superior education, training, and experience who are interested in maintaining the initiative in the face of carefully calculated business risks to stay on top of the competitive heap.

It takes people with pride in workmanship who carefully apply their skills and disciplines to produce a marketable product of fine competitive quality on time and within carefully controlled costs. It takes first-line supervisors who are very much aware of the influence they have over their people and who by their example influence them to do their jobs more effectively.

It takes a healthy, profitable company to engage in public service activities. This takes managers with superior skills who recognize and take advantage of opportunities while keeping the wheels turning, the costs down, and the profits up.

It takes broad-gauged managers who see beyond the four walls of their offices to initiate social change and do so profitably, instead of merely reacting to change. It takes managers with special skills in communication, organization, selection, utilization, motivation, and manpower development to make business plans become realities.

In short, the bigger the job to be done, the higher the caliber of person who must be hired to do the job and the more complex and challenging the task of managing him and providing the climate and the environment within which he will put forth his best efforts. Whatever the objective, the human resource is the key factor in its attainment.

Identification and solution of management problems is another responsibility of the human resources executive. One of the prerequisites of the human resources executive is to recognize those causes and provide operating management with the tools to reduce the effects or eliminate the conditions that detract from an organization ability to achieve its goals.

To set guide-posts to line management in managing the human asset is a vital part of the human resources executive responsibility. He does this by formulating and recommending policy for approval by the executive office. Policies are made for several reasons: to assure consistency of action by all managers faced with common decisions; to avoid making the same decisions over and over again; to provide for fair and equitable treatment of all employees in similar situations and circumstances; to communicate top management major philosophies, values, and attitudes and to translate these into practice; to insure maintenance of a competitive posture in accord with company goals; to communicate top management decisions to all concerned.

Employee relations policies relate to compensation, vacations, holidays, fringe benefits, moving expenses and transfer allowances, performance appraisal, discrimination, termination, severance pay, promotions, manpower development, educational assistance, disciplinary action and discharge, and communication.

Good, sound, up-to-date employee relations policies, well administered, help to prevent conflict and internal dissension. They clarify and communicate. They provide guidelines for managerial decisions on human resource questions. They help to recruit high-caliber executives. As an example, if a company compensation policy provides for payment above the going rate for executive talent, the recruiting job is made immeasurably easier. Money is important, particularly at the middle management levels. Add to the dollars a sound fringe benefit package, including a holiday and vacation schedule on the liberal side for the industry, and chances of winning over a prospect are further enhanced. Couple this with a formal policy of education assistance, including a plan for the individual career development, and the chances are enhanced even further. As the candidate sees his job responsibility spelled out, visualizes how and where he can contribute, perceives his avenues for advancement, and then finds it will cost him nothing to relocate his family, the odds heavily favor the company in the recruitment market.

Review - MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US

Pros: Big Hard Drive, Webcam,10" Bright Screen, Low Price

Cons: Wireless g, but no wireless N.

Summary: If you need a little more than just connecting to the internet at the coffee shop, the MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US should do the trick. With plenty of hard drive space and slightly larger screen than your typical netbook, the MSI Wind Netbook will actually let you get some work done.

I've never been a big fan of these netbooks. The early ones actually had less memory and processing power than my blackberry. However, we are now seeing some come out with the new Intel Atom Processor, 10" screens, and most importantly, a real 160gb hard drive! With Windows XP installed, you can now run all your office applications and software that you would on your desktop. Now you can actually get some work done. In fact, for normal office/student use, this can be your sole computer. Just add a USB keyboard/mouse and attach a 20" monitor, and you have yourself a virtual desktop.

The Wireless G is sufficient for 99.9% of wireless users right now, but wireless N is the latest and greatest. Although technically faster than wireless g, it's real advantage is range. However, don't let the fact that this runs on wireless g keep you from buying it. I don't know of any hotspots that are using wireless N right now, and for home/office use, range is probably not a problem.

As for the processor and memory. The MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US uses Intel Atom which is designed primarily to extend battery life by using less power. From various benchmarks, it excels in office applications and multimedia decoding (watching DVD's for example). For gaming and other high graphic intensive applications, it lags significantly behind processors found in larger 6 pound laptops.

The MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US comes with 1gb of ram and can be expanded to 2gb. For normal use on a Windows XP operating system, this should be fine. Generally, you'll only notice your system slowing down when you have several applications open at the same time. If you constantly open several applications at the same time, a 2gb upgrade is cheap and you'll be glad you did it. Otherwise, just open one thing at a time, and close it each time you're done before opening the next app.

I really can't comment on the webcam too much. It works, the picture is decent in bright light, and it will work with all the major messenger services. Nothing to brag about here, but it's there if you need it.

In summary, the MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US does more a blackberry, let's you do excel spreadsheets and word documents, checks your email, and comes with a real hard disk for saving your work. Also, the 10" big enough for you to actually see things. The amazing thing about his netbook is the price. It costs the about the same as other netbooks that don't have a real hard drive.

Quick Specs: MSI Wind Netbook U120-024US Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz, 1GB DDR2 667MHz, 160GB SATA, 10" WSVGA LCD, 1024x600, LED Backlight, Intel GMA950, 4-in-1 Card Reader, 1.3MP Cam, 10/100, 802.11b/g/, 6-cell Li-Ion, Windows XP Home

Math Facts Bingo

A maths tutor marketing by Scotts Digital, a Singapore marketing company for maths tutor in Singapore.:-

The game of bingo is familiar one for most adults. Most of us know how to play bingo - and that could be simply as a result of watching others play, or perhaps because we have played the game ourselves. What many people do not know however is that versions of bingo are now used by many teachers in their classrooms.

Perhaps, the most familiar variants of educational bingo are perhaps those used in English, reading and language classes. In these versions, the bingo cards are printed with letters, words or phrases. The students check off the matching bingo squares in response to the teacher's bingo calls. The squares might be matched by containing the letter the teacher's word begins with ("phonemic awareness bingo"), being a sight word that the teacher calls out ("sight word bingo"), matching the definition the teacher gives ("vocabulary bingo"), or perhaps being even the French, German, Italian or Spanish translation of an English word read out by the teacher ("language bingo").

Bingo versions can also be used to help teach math:

* Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division bingo - The bingo cards can be printed with math problems (in which case the student must find the matching problem when called out by teacher, and write in the correct answer), or they can be printed with numbers (for example, a student may mark off the "24" square if the teacher says "4 times 6").

* Decimals bingo - The student must find the square containing "0.59" if the teacher says 59 hundredths, etc. Teachers can also introduce less obvious puzzles into the mix, for example, students must find "0.25" when the teacher says "a quarter".

* Fractions bingo - Similar to decimals bingo, but the squares contain fractions. Students might be required not only to find the matching fraction when given in the same form, but also be able to find less obvious matches, for example finding the square containing "1/2" even if the teacher calls out "0.5" or "two quarters".

* Rounding bingo - Students must find the square containing "100" when the teacher says "round 97 to the nearest multiple of 10", etc.

Quick and Easy Recipes For Sausage and Peppers

Whether eaten on a bun or by itself, sausage with peppers is a delicious meal to make for you and your family. My first encounter with this tasty sandwich was at a county fair when I was a youngster. It basically consisted of spicy Italian sausage, onions, green pepper and a tomato based sauce. Since then I have tried many different variations of this comfort food favorite. You can experiment with different sauces, peppers, onions and sausage to create your own masterpiece. Here are a couple quick and easy sausage and peppers recipes for you to try, just in time for Football Sunday!

Sausage and Peppers

What you need:

• 1.5-2 lbs Italian sausage links
• 2 large onions, sliced
• 1 large red or yellow bell pepper, cut in strips
• 1 large green bell pepper, cut in strips
• 3/4 t salt
• 1/2 t oregano leaves
• 2 T olive oil

What you do:

• Pour about 1/3 c water into a large skillet. Add sausage to skillet and cook over med heat until water simmers. Cover skillet and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Remove cover and continue cooking, turning often, for about 20 minutes or until sausage is nicely browned. Set aside sausage and add olive oil to skillet. Heat oil and add all remaining ingredients to pan. Cook over med heat until vegetables are browned and tender, stirring often. Add sausage to skillet, cover and cook on low until heated through.
• Sausage and peppers are great by themselves or with a side of rice. They are also delicious on a brat bun or crusty roll with your favorite condiments.

Low Fat Sausage and Peppers

What you need:

• 14 -16 oz package smoked turkey sausage
• 1 medium onion, sliced
• 1 large green pepper, cut in strips
• 1 large red pepper, cut in strips
• 14.5 oz can crushed tomatoes
• 4 oz can sliced mushrooms, drained
• 2 T olive oil
• 1 t oregano
• 1 t basil
• 1/2 t red pepper flakes
• 1/4 t garlic salt
• 1/8 t black pepper

What you do:

• Heat 1 T olive oil in a large skillet over med-high heat. Add onion, peppers, mushrooms, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper to skillet and cook until vegetables are softened but still crisp, stirring frequently. Remove vegetables from pan. Heat 1 T oil in skillet. Cut sausage in half lengthwise, then slice in 1/2 inch pieces. Add sausage to skillet and cook at med-high heat until lightly browned. Add vegetables and crushed tomatoes to skillet and mix. Cook over medium-heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through; serve.
• If you're not worried about the fat content, you may use polish sausage or smoked sausage.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in The Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has a long roster of delectable food common with countries nearby such as Puerto Rico and Cuba as they share similar cultural traditions. As such, their cuisine has Arab, Chinese, Spanish, Italian and African ingredients.

For breakfast, the locals like to eat tropical fruits like bananas, passion fruit, papaya, mangoes, pineapples, jagua and zapote. Breakfast is also never complete without their traditional mangu. With its savory taste, it serves as a perfect appetizer to start the day. This is prepared by mixing mashed plantains, taro and cassava, sometimes varying it a bit by adding squash called auyama. They add fried shallots, cheese, eggs or salami to add to its rich taste.

During lunch, don't be surprised if they serve you the Dominican flag. Also known as La Bandera Dominicana, this dish is prepared with white rice, meat from beef, pork, chicken or goat, and bean stew made from white, red or black beans or even pigeon peas. It is served with salad or steamed vegetables, making it a complete meal.

Dinner is usually light on the stomach, which may be just a simple sandwich and a refreshing drink using natural fruit juices or a cup of hot chocolate or tea, depending on the season.

A festive treat for special events is a Dominican food called Sancocho, which is a stew prepared by mixing seven various kinds of meat, several tubers, and vegetables. Eat with them during Easter, and you will be delighted to taste their sweet beans called habichelas con dulce.

Story of Tiramisu and Real Italian Recipe

There are several versions which tell the history of Tiramisu and this makes it hard to trace the real roots of this delicious dessert.

I think we should eat it and enjoy it but being Italy a country with a very rich culinary regional tradition, the question on the creator of Tiramisu has started a real dispute, mainly amongst the region of Tuscany, Piedmont and Veneto.

The official version however makes Tuscany the birthplace of the world loved Tiramisu.

The official story tells that Tiramisu was invented in the 17th century in Siena to celebrate the visit of Grand-duke of Tuscany, Cosimo de Medici (the Medici family is one of the most important family in the history of Tuscany). The chefs wanted the dessert to reflect the Grand-duke personality. So it needed to be important, with an outstanding taste; rich and creamy as the Grand-Duke loved desserts and sweet food in general. It also needed to be made with local ingredients! This is how the Tiramisu recipe was worked out. The result, we all know is absolutely outstanding.

The original name of the dessert was "Zuppa del Duca" which means "Duke's Trifle". The Grand-Duke loved the dessert so much that he took the recipe with him to Florence. This had a tremendous success amongst the Italian aristocracy. The word that went round the aristocracy's milieu bestowed aphrodisiac power to the trifle and this is how the name Tiramisu was coined. Tiramisu literally means "lift me up".

After a bit of historical background, here is the recipe:

Ingredients

6 eggs medium size
14 oz (400 g) Ladyfinger biscuits
½ cup brewed espresso or very strong coffee, at room temperature
5 oz (120 g) white sugar plus 2 spoonful to sweeten the coffee
17 oz (500 g) mascarpone cheese
2 oz (50g) Bitter sweet chocolate flakes (optional)
1 oz (30 g) bittersweet chocolate or cocoa powder for dusting (optional)

Divide the egg yolks from the egg whites. Then whisk the egg yolks and half sugar with an electric mixer until very thick. Then add the mascarpone. Whisk until smooth. Then whisk the egg whites and the remaining sugar. When is smooth, add the two mixtures together. Spread a layer of cream on a dip dish.

Pour the sweetened coffee in a shallow bowl. Dip the two sides of each ladyfinger in the coffee and then place it in the dip dish on top of the cream.

Repeat this for each ladyfinger until the layer is completed then you pour the cream on top. Then repeat the layers until all the coffee is used up.

Refrigerate overnight.

Before serving, sprinkle the top with cocoa powder and/or chocolate flakes if desired.

Introducing a Coaching Culture

A coaching culture is where an organisation uses coaching techniques as the main management style, there is an emphasis on collaborative working and the organisation is committed to developing its people.

Most professional organisations use mentoring as part of an induction process for new recruits and as part of the career development process for individuals. Mentoring is very good for passing on specific knowledge quickly but is not so good at developing the potential of individuals, teams and organisations.

To develop potential a coaching approach has been demonstrated as being far more effective with a better return on investment than conventional training or mentoring. Coaching can be slower initially but then rapidly accelerates and produces greater and longer lasting improvement in performance and motivation.

Every organisation is different, has its own culture, is at a particular stage of development, has its own values, has its own way of doing things and has its own goals. Because of this introducing a coaching culture has to be tailored to each organisation. There are some steps I would recommend to most organisations:-

  • Find out where you are at present. You may think your organisation operates efficiently and professionally but cannot explain your staff turnover and absentee rate. You may have tried other techniques only to run into unexpected opposition and have ended up wasting both time and money. This fact find is best carried out by an external advisor who will provide an unbiased report.
  • Start at the top. For coaching to work effectively its introduction must start at the very top. I have seen some organisations try to introduce it at the bottom only to find it causes more problems as people's expectations are raised only to find the more senior managers are not ready for the cultural shift.
  • Understand why you should introduce a coaching culture into your organisation. This may be to improve staff retention, improve team performance, achieve alignment with corporate goals, improve innovation or a large variety of other reasons. Again by knowing your starting point and your goal it will be possible to measure the return you make on your investment.
  • Coaching needs to become your chosen method of operating and management, it should not be a peripheral or parallel system which is used occasionally. It needs to permeate all your systems, interactions and decisions
  • All systems require support and the same is true for coaching. People should be actively encouraged to coach other people and to receive coaching. There is always room for improvement and there is always a contribution that coaching can make. Even people who have received coaching on several occasions will benefit from additional coaching, perhaps from a different coach.
  • Progress towards a coaching culture needs to be managed in the same way as any other project. Goals need to be set, budgets allocated, the project is initiated and progress in monitored. Any deviations from plan are investigated and either adopted or corrected as required.

You will start to notice the change very quickly as confrontations and arguments reduce to be replaced by a collaborative and supportive approach. People, who perhaps made little contribution previously, start to make suggestions and eventually to lead projects.

You will look back at what your organisation used to be like and wonder why did you not introduce a coaching culture sooner
